How the difference between two dates is calculated
This calculator doesn't just subtract total days: it first works out the calendar-based difference between the two dates — how many full years, months and days lie between them, just like counting on an almanac. From there it also calculates the total number of days, weeks and hours between the dates, so you can use whichever unit is most useful.
If you enter the end date before the start date, the calculator automatically swaps the order and calculates the difference anyway, so you don't need to enter them in a particular order. The result follows standard calendar counting, with no hours added and no dependence on your time zone.
Frequently asked questions
Does the difference count both the start and end day, or just one of them?
The calculation counts the number of full days between the two dates using the calendar method: for example, from the 1st to the 3rd of a month is a 2-day difference, the same as counting on an almanac.
Does it matter which order I enter the dates in?
No. If you enter the end date before the start date, the calculator automatically reorders them and shows the same difference, with no negative values.
Does the calculator count business days or just calendar days?
It counts calendar days, including weekends and holidays. It doesn't subtract non-working days or account for country-specific public holidays.
Does daylight saving time affect the result?
No. The calculation uses only the dates (day, month and year), with no hours or time zone involved, so daylight saving changes don't affect the result.
